Cell Biology is a scientific discipline that studies the fundamental unit of all living beings on Earth: the cell.

Given its importance as a key element in every organism, the cell has become the main target of research, through the analysis of the cell physiology, subcellular organization and structure, organelle biology, cell-cell interactions, influence of environment on the cell, gene structure and regulation, among others.

Thus, the knowledge of cell function mechanisms will help us understand diseases such as cancer, diabetes or Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, it could help developing new therapeutic approaches for treatment of these and many other diseases, disorders and injuries (like organ and tissue repair), or to establish new strategies in the fight against microorganisms like bacteria, viruses or parasites. Cell biology encompasses a great diversity of organisms, from bacteria to the specialized cells that constitute multicellular organisms such as humans, trees, birds or insects.

In our department, cell biologists constitute an outstanding group with a diverse academic background, whose main goals are to solve fundamental questions and find and establish new horizons in Biology. This exciting enterprise is carried out by the use of techniques developed in other disciplines, including Biochemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Neurobiology, Bioinformatics, Genomics and Proteomics. Furthermore, we also use those techniques and methods developed by ourselves to solve the questions that arise in the midst of research.

You are welcome to one of the most exciting forefronts in Biology: the study of the cell.

Please be welcome to the Department of Cell Biology at Cinvestav.
